Burg Süpplingenburg, Archaeological site in Süpplingenburg, Germany.
The medieval castle foundation lies on an island in the Schunter River between Königslutter and Helmstedt in Lower Saxony, measuring 70 meters by 70 meters.
Emperor Lothair III established his residence at this location in the early 12th century, converting the fortress into a collegiate foundation in 1130.
The site includes the preserved St. John Church, which represents the architectural transition from the medieval castle to a religious establishment.
Archaeological excavations in 1975 revealed coins and Gothic architectural elements near the church area, providing evidence of the medieval settlement.
The castle grounds transformed from an imperial residence to a Templar stronghold in 1173, later becoming a commandry of the Knights Hospitaller until 1820.
