Burg Süpplingenburg

Burg Süpplingenburg, Archaeological site in Süpplingenburg, Germany.

Burg Süpplingenburg is a medieval castle site located on an island in the Schunter River between Königslutter and Helmstedt in Lower Saxony. The fortified grounds contain the remains of St. John Church and archaeological deposits from different periods of occupation.

The site was founded as an imperial residence by Emperor Lothair III in the early 12th century and converted into a collegiate church in 1130. The Templars took control in the 13th century, and it later served as a Hospitaller commandery until the early 19th century.

The preserved St. John Church shows how the medieval site transformed its purpose over time and took on religious meaning. Visitors can see today how the church reflects the location's shift from military to spiritual use.

The site sits on an island and is only fully accessible during low water conditions; visitors should check river conditions beforehand. Sturdy footwear is recommended because the ground is uneven and marked by visible archaeological excavations.

Excavations in 1975 uncovered coins and Gothic architectural elements that show the site was intensively used over many centuries. These discoveries suggest that a community here remained active through multiple changes in ownership and purpose.
