Binnendünen Nordoe, Nature reserve in Dägeling, Germany
Binnendünen Nordoe is a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein featuring inland dunes, dry meadows, heathland, and nutrient-poor water bodies across about 407 hectares. The landscape supports specialized plants and animals that depend on these harsh, infertile conditions.
The area once served as a military training ground, first for the Prussian Army and later for the Wehrmacht during the German Empire. After this period, the land was placed under protection to preserve its valuable habitats.
The reserve depends on volunteer groups and seasonal work teams who help manage the vegetation and keep habitats suitable for wildlife.
Access is through maintained pathways at the end of Krebsweg in Dägeling, with parking near L119. The best time to visit is May through September, when vegetation is most active and trails are dry and walkable.
Boer goats are used during summer months to control vegetation through grazing and maintain the open landscape. This herd plays an active role in ecological management and is a distinctive feature of how the reserve operates.
