The Fußgängerbrücke am Torhausplatz is a pedestrian crossing over the Main-Danube Canal with a curved shape supported by two steel tube masts. The structure spans approximately 62 meters and provides continuous foot traffic access across the waterway.
The structure was built between 1986 and 1988 as a replacement for an earlier bridge during the expansion of the canal infrastructure. This new construction was part of broader efforts to create improved transportation connections in the area.
The bridge received the Engineering Prize in 1988 for its innovative design, created by the Munich architectural firm Ackermann und Partner.
The bridge offers a walkway roughly 3.3 meters wide and is easily accessible from the surrounding streets of Kelheim. The access is free in both directions and allows quick crossing of the canal on foot.
The structure was recognized for its innovative design solutions and incorporates particular technical features in its construction. These details make it an interesting example of modern bridge engineering in the region.
