Pauluskirche, Lutheran church in Duesternbrook, Kiel, Germany

Pauluskirche is a church located in Duesternbrook with a prominent 55-meter tower rising from a 22-meter hill that creates a striking silhouette on the skyline. The structure serves as a navigation landmark visible from the Kiel Fjord and is even marked on nautical charts.

Construction took place from 1878 to 1882 when it was built as a garrison chapel for the Prussian naval base at Kiel. The building transitioned from military use after 1918 to become a parish church serving the local community.

This church serves as a memorial site, with commemorative tablets throughout the interior honoring those lost at sea and in military service. The inscriptions create a solemn atmosphere that reflects Kiel's deep connection to naval and maritime traditions.

Inside, you will find two organs that enhance the acoustic space: a substantial main instrument and a smaller choir organ positioned in the chancel area. These are historic instruments crafted by master builders that contribute to the musical experience during services.

One of the bronze bells dates to 1659 and was cast in Frankfurt/Oder before being acquired from the Hamburg Bell Cemetery after World War I. This ancient bell connects different chapters of German history and geography within a single object.
