Münnerstädter altar, Gothic altar in Münnerstadt, Germany.
The retable stands 15 meters tall in St. Maria Magdalena Church, featuring intricate sculptures depicting religious figures and biblical scenes carved in wood.
Tilman Riemenschneider crafted this high altar between 1490 and 1492 for 145 gulden, marking an early example of his religious sculptural works.
The central shrine presents Mary Magdalene lifted by six angels, while the predella displays the four Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The altar underwent reconstruction from 1979 to 1981, incorporating original elements and replicas of pieces now housed in museums across Germany.
This retable introduced an innovative pigmented glue overlay technique instead of traditional color painting, with only stars and mouths receiving color treatment.
