Lechbrücke Gersthofen, Highway bridge in Augsburg, Germany
The Lechbrücke Gersthofen is a highway bridge that carries the A8 autobahn across the Lech River between Augsburg and Gersthofen. It features six lanes for vehicles with separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists running along its southern side.
The original bridge at this site was constructed between 1935 and 1936 but was destroyed in April 1945. Following the war, reconstruction took place and the structure was subsequently upgraded and improved.
The bridge connects the communities of Augsburg and Gersthofen, serving residents and travelers who walk or cycle across it daily. It functions as a vital link between these two areas on the Lech River.
The bridge is accessible year-round with clear markings and separate safe paths for pedestrians and cyclists on the south side. Be aware that heavy autobahn traffic on the north side means noise is present throughout the day.
During construction in August 2005, flooding caused the temporary foundation to erode and shift, tilting the steel structure dangerously. This event reveals how powerful the Lech River can be when swollen with water.
