Pfennigbrücke, Pedestrian bridge in Celle, Germany
The Pfennigbrücke crosses the Aller River and connects Celle's old town with the Dammaschwiesen residential area through a steel and concrete structure. The bridge offers pedestrians and cyclists a direct crossing over the river.
The bridge was built in 1900 as a wooden toll structure charging one pfennig for passage. It was reconstructed in 1925 and replaced with a concrete version in 1952.
The bridge serves as the finish point for the annual Aller Winter Torch Swimming event, organized by the German Life Saving Association since 1966. This event has made it a gathering place for athletes and spectators in the community.
The bridge is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists and offers the quickest route between the old town and residential areas to the north. The best times to cross are during quieter periods of the day when there is less traffic.
Since 2014, the bridge has featured a color-changing lighting system and an art installation that recalls its past as a toll crossing. This illumination makes the structure stand out, especially after dark.
