Pfarrkirche, Catholic church in Baunach, Germany

St. Oswald is the Catholic parish church of Baunach. Its 13th-century tower has a light brown stone lower section with a clock face and a steep dark spire with a reddish base and small windows. The pale yellow nave with a grey, steeply pitched roof and dormer windows stands to its left.

A church existed in Baunach by 815, founded under Fulda Abbot Ratgar and consecrated in 823 by Würzburg Bishop Wolfgar. The tower was built in the 13th century, in or before 1244, during Fulda rule. The choir and nave were rebuilt from 1454 and consecrated in 1460; the church was extended in 1970–1972 and redesigned from 2016 to 2018.

The parish belongs to the parish community of St. Christophorus in the Baunach, Itz and Lauter valleys, in the Diocese of Würzburg. The church is dedicated to Saint Oswald, a patronage attested in Germany since the early Middle Ages. Since 2018 the Holy Tomb, a Rococo painted stage set, has been visible all year in a niche in the south wall.

The Heiliges Grab is set in a niche in the south wall and, since the church reopened on 11 March 2018, can be viewed all year round. The former altarpiece by Jacques Gassmann, 12.5 m high and 8 m wide, hangs as a counterweight to it, with a Gothic Pietà placed in front since 2018. The baptismal font, probably from the 15th century, now stands in the middle of the church.

The parish church keeps a painted Heiliges Grab from the 18th century, attributed to Johann Anwander (1715–1770) and restored in the 1980s. Set in a niche in the south wall like a stage backdrop, it shows the dead Christ until Easter night, when the figure is replaced by the risen Christ with a victory banner.
