Frauenkirche, Gothic and Romanesque church in Grimma, Germany.

The Frauenkirche in Grimma is a three-aisled pillar basilica built of Rochlitz stone, with a transept, a rectangular main choir to the east, two semicircular apsides and a broad west hall flanked by two towers about 46 metres high. The oldest part is the late-12th-century Romanesque west tower front; the nave was completed in Gothic style by about 1240, and the transept was added around 1462.

A Romanesque church replaced a wooden predecessor near the old market, today's Baderplan, at the end of the 12th century; the nave was completed in Gothic style by about 1240. The town fire of 1430 damaged the building, and the transept was added around 1462. Until the Reformation the church answered to the Bishop of Merseburg and housed an archdeacon's seat; in 1529 Grimma received a superintendentur.

The late Gothic winged altar, made around 1510 by the "Master of the Knauthain Altar", shows the Nativity of Christ in the central shrine, with Mary and Elisabeth on the left wing and the Adoration of the Magi on the right. During Passiontide the altar is closed, revealing painted scenes including the Flight into Egypt. Three carved figures from around 1519, Peter, Paul and Mary with Child, came here from the Nikolaikirche demolished in 1888.

The church stands on the Baderplan, the site of Grimma's old market, in the floodplain of the Mulde; the ground and churchyard were raised about 1.5 metres, so the west front sits above street level. The two 46-metre towers are the landmark to aim for when orienting yourself in the old town. The main choir faces east toward the Mulde.

The oldest part is the late 12th-century Romanesque west tower front, a hall with paired round-arched windows that splits into two towers about 46 m tall. The bells include a large 1453 bell on d and a small 1463 bell on g; a third was sold in 1940 and its replacement given up as a "bell donation" in 1942. A new middle bell cast in Karlsruhe completed the trio in 1997.
