G2 Kunsthalle, Contemporary art museum in Leipzig, Germany
G2 Kunsthalle is a contemporary art museum in Leipzig that displays works across multiple exhibition spaces. The rooms accommodate rotating presentations from both established and emerging artists.
The building at Dittrichring 13 was erected in 1986 for the VEB Datenverarbeitungszentrum of the city of Leipzig, on a site cleared of World War II ruins. After 1989–1990 the data centre never took up operations and the building stood partly empty, used only for offices and storage. The Leipzig property merchant Steffen Hildebrand acquired and renovated it, converting 1,100 m² into the G2 Kunsthalle, which opened in March 2015.
Since 2017 the G2 Kunsthalle has awarded the Meisterschülerpreis with the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. The prize includes 10,000 euros and a studio for twelve months, given each year to a graduate of the academy.
The Kunsthalle occupies the third floor of the building at Dittrichring 13, in central Leipzig near the Museum der bildenden Künste and the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst. The exhibition floor covers 1100 m²; since July 2022 the Schaulager has added over 1100 m² on another level, bringing the total to more than 2200 m². Allow time for both levels.
The Schaulager section uses an open storage system that directly connects artwork preservation with exhibition space. Visitors can see how artworks are stored and cared for, revealing what normally stays hidden.
