Richard-Wagner-Denkmal, Bronze memorial statue in Mitte district, Leipzig, Germany.
The Richard Wagner monument features a 1.8-meter bronze figure of the young composer in casual dress standing upon a white marble base reaching about 2.9 meters in total height. The base includes marble panels on three sides carved with opera scenes and characters.
The monument was unveiled in 2013 to mark the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth and was based on designs created by Max Klinger in 1913. World War I had interrupted the artist's original plans decades earlier.
The marble panels display characters from Wagner's operas such as the Rhine maidens, Siegfried, and Parsifal carved in relief. These representations give visitors a visual sense of the dramatic stories the composer brought to the stage.
The monument is located in the city center and can be easily reached by public transportation. A short walk of a few minutes from the main train station or tram stops brings you directly to the site.
Behind the bronze figure of the young man stands a black bronze plate showing the silhouette of an older Wagner. This symbolically represents how the famous composer's career developed and changed throughout his life.
