Lochmühle Lohmen, Historic watermill in Lohmen, Germany
Lochmühle Lohmen is a watermill located at the entrance of Liebethaler Grund, a narrow gorge carved by the Wesenitz River through sandstone rock. The mill stands in a deep valley surrounded by high cliff walls.
First documented in 1559 as a grain-grinding mill, the building had to be reconstructed in 1681 following a landslide that damaged it. A fire in 1828 destroyed the structure again, leading to another complete rebuild.
The composer Richard Wagner spent time here in 1846 and wrote sections of his opera Lohengrin during a summer visit. A monument erected in 1933 stands as a reminder of this creative period by the famous musician.
The mill is currently not open to visitors due to ongoing restoration work that began in 2017. However, the surrounding area offers hiking trails through the gorge that are open to the public.
Until 1799, the mill could only be reached on foot as no cart path existed through the valley. The first wagon road was not built until that year, making the site much more accessible to supplies and visitors.
