Kastell Burghöfe, Roman military fort in Mertingen, Germany

Kastell Burghöfe is a Roman military fortress whose remains stand on elevated ground near the Danube River. The ruins display rectangular walls and observation points that follow Roman military building methods.

This fortress was built in the 4th century and served as an important military outpost along the Danube-Iller-Rhine border line. It defended the northern frontier of the Roman Empire against outside threats.

Excavations at this location have uncovered objects that reveal how Roman soldiers lived and worshiped here. A fragment of a Mercury statue and an altar dedicated to Apollo show the gods that mattered to them.

The site is equipped with information panels and marked paths that let visitors explore the archaeological remains on their own. The best time to visit is during dry weather, as the paths are then easy to walk.

The location contains remnants of a medieval castle that was built directly on the foundations of the Roman fortress. This layering reveals how military strongholds remained in use at the same spot for many centuries.
