Russian-orthodox church in Gifhorn

St. Nicholas Church in Gifhorn is a wooden building designed as a replica of a Russian Orthodox church from the Vladimir Region. The structure features typical elements like onion domes and an interior fully equipped with Orthodox furnishings and religious artwork.

The building was constructed in 1995 after a German entrepreneur encountered the original church during travels in Suzdal and decided to create a copy. That same year it was dedicated to the Russian Orthodox Church and placed under their oversight.

The church displays the architectural forms and interior arrangements typical of Russian Orthodox tradition, and is actively used by the local Russian Orthodox community. Visitors can observe religious practices and traditions as they occur within the space.

Entry to the church is arranged through a museum complex that includes other historical exhibits and requires a ticket. It helps to check ahead whether the church is open to visitors, as it also serves the congregation for religious services.

The building was a personal gift from a German industrialist to the Russian Orthodox Church, making it an unusual example of private patronage. This generous donation reflects a bridge between German and Russian culture in the region.
