Berg-Kaserne, Military barracks in Giessen, Germany
Berg-Kaserne is a military barracks complex on the eastern side of Giessen featuring multiple buildings in traditional military architectural style. The site spreads across a large area and shows the typical layout of late 19th century military installations.
The barracks was founded in 1885 and initially housed the 2nd Hessian Infantry Regiment. An expansion followed in 1897 to accommodate a machine gun company.
The facility includes a 1938 soldier group relief by artist Carl Bourcarde, depicting rural life scenes that represent the artistic elements of military installations.
The complex underwent renovation in 2011 and sections now serve various modern purposes. Visitors should note that not all areas are freely accessible since some sectors remain in administrative use.
The original iron gate at the main entrance carries an inscription marking the period from 1887 to 1918 when the Kaiser Wilhelm Infantry Regiment No. 116 occupied the barracks. A 1938 relief by artist Carl Bourcarde depicting rural life scenes remains a notable artwork within the complex.
