Klosterkirche St. Heinrich

Klosterkirche St. Heinrich is a two-nave Gothic hall church with stone vaults, decorated walls, and a tower positioned between the nave and choir. The building features tall windows that flood the interior with light and carefully crafted vaults that define the sacred space.

Dominican monks from Leipzig established the monastery around 1300 and expanded it during the 14th century into a major religious center. The church became a place of intense monastic activity within the growing city.

The interior wall paintings from the 1400s show religious scenes including the Last Judgment and the Virgin Mary with donors who supported the church. These images reveal how medieval people understood faith and art.

The church is accessible through a passage from Breite Strasse and can be visited with guided tours that explain its architecture and artwork. Visitors should allow time to explore the vaults and decorations at a comfortable pace.

Inside stands a wooden cross about 6 meters high created by sculptor Friedrich Press in 1973 that dominates the space. This modern artwork creates a striking contrast between the medieval architecture and contemporary design.
