Wasserschloss, Baroque water castle in Wolnzach, Germany

Wasserschloss is a water castle in Wolnzach featuring two stories with a hipped roof and an ornately structured portal crowned with a broken pediment. The building displays typical Baroque characteristics and sits prominently in the town center.

Starzhausen is documented around 1030 as the seat of a Hofmark held by the local noble family of the Starzhausener. The castle burned three times: in 1598, in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War, and lastly around 1699. The present building was erected around 1709, after which it passed to the Counts of Preysing and remained a Preysing Hofmark until 1848.

The castle stands in Starzhausen, a hamlet of the market town Wolnzach in the Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm district, not in Wolnzach's town centre. It is a preserved but decaying monument, so the grounds are best viewed from outside; the moat and the surrounding open land can be reached on foot from the hamlet.

The present building dates from around 1709, not 1697, and was erected after the third fire, which struck around 1699. From then until 1848 the estate was a Hofmark of the Counts of Preysing. The castle is listed as monument D-1-86-162-83, and the site is also recorded as a buried archaeological monument.
