St. Quirin

St. Quirin is a former Benedictine abbey and parish church in Tegernsee with a three-aisled pillar basilica developed over many centuries. The building features a western double-tower facade and is divided into sections with side chapels and a chancel.

A monastic community was founded around 746 at the lakeside after monks brought the relics of Saint Quirinus from Rome. This religious foundation shaped the region and the monastery became an important center over many generations.

The church displays elaborate ceiling frescoes by Hans Georg Asam and Rococo chapels decorated with sculptures by Johann Baptist Straub. These artistic works shape the interior and reflect the craft traditions that visitors encounter while walking through the space.

The site is centrally located in Tegernsee at Schloßplatz 2 and is easily reached on foot. Keep in mind that services and ceremonies take place here, so the best time to explore is when no worship is scheduled.

A spring emerged at the spot where the relics of Saint Quirinus rested during their journey from Rome to Tegernsee. This water source became connected to local lore about the holy event and is often overlooked by visitors exploring the grounds.
