Kirche, Catholic parish church in Steinbach am Wald, Germany.
St. Nikolaus is a plastered hall church with a recessed rectangular choir and a two-bay ribbed vault. A slate-clad wooden tower with an octagonal spire rises above the choir, and the nave is spanned by boards and a central beam. The sacristy has a slate lean-to roof.
A chapel in Windheim was mentioned in 1190; in 1478 the parish separated from Teuschnitz. The choir walls and nave core are late medieval, and the choir's ribbed vault was added around 1612. Auxiliary Bishop Friedrich Förner consecrated the church in 1613. From 1705 to 1709 the nave was lengthened and raised, and a pointed spire was built above the choir.
The parish was separated from Teuschnitz in 1478, and Hirschfeld, Buchbach and Steinbach am Wald were later assigned to it. Inside, the 1755 pulpit rests on a Corinthian-style column, with the four Evangelists seated before its basket panels. The high altar's 1759 painting by Marquard Treu depicts the patron saint, Nicholas.
The church stands in the walled cemetery on the western edge of Windheim, so approach from the village centre. A south portal gives entry to the nave; the sacristy sits in the northern corner of the tower. The interior was renovated in 2019/2020, with a new ceiling, heating and seating.
The 1970/1971 west extension added about 7 metres to the nave and allowed the two-storey wooden galleries to be removed; the sacristy was rebuilt at the same time. The 2019/2020 renovation renewed the nave ceiling, the heating and the interior and exterior plaster, and set back the gallery with new seating.
