Schloss Geyern, Medieval castle in Bergen, Germany
Schloss Geyern is a castle in Bergen featuring a two-story structure with four corner towers and a central tower with battlements. The building displays neo-Gothic elements and was constructed in the 1800s while incorporating older portions of the original medieval fortification.
The castle was built in the 12th century and came under Bavarian ducal control in 1260. The Schenken von Geyern family, who served as ministers to the Bishops of Eichstätt, then established themselves as permanent residents.
The Schenken von Geyern family shaped this residence over many generations as their home. Today you can sense this long connection through the architecture and the overall feeling of the estate.
The castle remains in private ownership by descendants of the Schenken von Geyern family, so the interior is not open to visitors. The exterior can be viewed and photographed from the surrounding areas.
The medieval tower known as the Bergfried was preserved and integrated into the neo-Gothic structure built in the 1800s. Also noteworthy is an 18th-century bridge that connects different sections of the estate.
