Basso, Abandoned water park in Bad Schmiedeberg, Germany
Basso is an abandoned water park in Bad Schmiedeberg, in the Saxony-Anhalt region of Germany, featuring empty pools, water slides, and service buildings left in place since it closed. The whole site sits inside the Dubener Heide nature area, surrounded by forest on most sides.
The facility opened in 1993, shortly after German reunification, as one of the first large leisure projects of this kind in eastern Germany. It stayed open until 2009 and has not been used since.
Shortly after reunification, the site drew visitors from across the region who were looking for new leisure options in eastern Germany. Walking through it today, you can still read the layout of the pools and slides and understand how people spent time here.
The site is reached by hiking trails that connect to the broader network of paths through the Dubener Heide. Sturdy shoes are a good idea since the ground is uneven and some surfaces can be slippery, especially after rain.
Even after more than 15 years of abandonment, most of the original structures remain standing, including the slides and mechanical rooms. Plants have pushed through cracks in the pool floors, turning the whole place into an open-air example of nature reclaiming built spaces.
