Haus der Freundschaft, Cultural heritage monument in Schkopau, Germany

Haus der Freundschaft is a cultural center in Schkopau with two main performance spaces designed in clean geometric forms. The larger theater hall seats 750 people while a smaller concert hall accommodates 250, and throughout the complex there are roughly 100 different rooms serving various event and activity purposes.

The building was constructed between 1952 and 1953 at the initiative of Soviet officers for approximately 20,000 employees of the Buna Works. It emerged during a period when cultural facilities were considered essential gathering spaces for the community.

The house took its name from the Soviet sponsors and was known internally as Buna-Klubhaus X 50, a number from the plant's building registry. Its 750-seat theatre and 250-seat concert hall hosted the Berliner Ensemble and a full season of Walter Felsenstein's Komische Oper. Workers' circles met here, including one for composing and writing workers; the painter Uwe Pfeifer attended a children's painting circle.

The Haus der Freundschaft has been closed since 1998 and is decaying, so it can only be viewed from the outside; do not attempt to enter. It stands on the eastern side of Bunastraße, opposite the so-called Ladenstraße linking the chemical plant with the village. The site is listed as a monument under registration number 094 20861.

The building housed technical equipment that ranked among the most advanced in East Germany. These sophisticated stage systems allowed the venue to host touring productions from major cities like Berlin and stage complex performances.
