Stadtkirche Unserer Lieben Frauen auf dem Berge, Lutheran church in Penig, Germany.
Stadtkirche Unserer Lieben Frauen auf dem Berge is a Lutheran hall church with three naves and six bays, ending at its eastern end in a seven-sided polygon with a tower at the northwest corner. Inside, four bronze bells of different sizes cast by various foundries throughout its history hang in the structure.
Construction began in 1476 with the tower, followed by the nave completed in 1499. The consecration took place in 1515 and marked the completion of this important building phase.
The painted ceiling from 1688 shows 68 biblical scenes and represents religious art from that period that visitors can still see today. These artworks tell stories from both the Old and New Testament and shape the interior of this house of worship.
Access to the church building is normally possible during visiting hours, which may vary depending on services and events. It is advisable to check in advance whether special services or events are taking place that could affect your visit.
An older chapel from 1380 still stands within the church and once served as the burial site for Burgrave Albrecht von Leisnig. This Chapel of Glory is a rare example of how older sacred spaces were integrated into newer church structures.
