Industriepalast Brandenburger Straße 14; 16a; 16b, Office and commercial building in Leipzig, Germany
The Industriepalast is a five-storey reinforced-concrete office and commercial complex on a sharp-angled plot at the junction of Brandenburger Straße and Dohnanyistraße, on the western edge of Leipzig's Graphisches Viertel. Its artificial-stone facade is divided by pilasters suggested between the windows, with a wavy line above them as a horizontal element; the portal surrounds each contain two male heads. The Brandenburger Straße wing runs 150 metres over 29 window axes, topped by a wavy gable with braid ornament and a roof turret.
The banker Martin Samuel Kroch commissioned the building around 1900 for his bank, founded in 1877, and had acquired the land near the emerging main station by 1910. Architects Heinrich Rust and Anton Käppler are both named in the literature; after about two years of construction it opened in 1913 for the International Building Trade Exhibition. The Kroch family was expropriated in 1938; from 1956 the VEB Stadtpelz, the GDR's leading fur-confections firm with some 500 employees, was based here.
The building displays architectural features from early industrial modernity with curved gables and towers that shape the streetscape. These design elements reflect the ambitions of Leipzig's industry and make the structure a marker of that era.
The building stands near Leipzig Central Station on Brandenburger Street and is visible from the street. Visitors should know that it is an active commercial building and not accessible everywhere.
The building's name comes from its original function as a rental office and commercial complex, not from manufacturing. From 1956 it housed the VEB Stadtpelz, a fur garment enterprise with about 500 employees and the leading furrier operation in East Germany, later part of the Kombinat Brühlpelz.
