Abtnaundorfer Park, Public park in Schönefeld-Abtnaundorf, Leipzig, Germany
Abtnaundorfer Park is a green space in Leipzig with forested sections, open meadows, and a pond featuring a small island with a temple structure. The grounds also contain grottos and other historical buildings that shape its character today.
The park was created between 1752 and 1755 as a manor garden by Dr. Traugott Thomasius, reflecting the landscape design practices of that era. The 1813 Battle of Leipzig caused significant damage to much of the grounds.
The park takes its name from the family that shaped its landscape and served as a gathering place for the surrounding community throughout the centuries. Visitors today can experience how local people use the grounds for walks and quiet moments in nature.
The park has a children's play area on its northern side with accessible pathways for visitors to explore the grounds on foot. Construction work for drainage improvements is ongoing in some areas, so be aware that certain sections may have limited access at times.
The island in the pond features a Monopteros temple topped with a bronze sculpture by artist Markus Gläser since 1991. This work replaced an earlier stone version and adds a contemporary artistic touch to the historical site.
