Dorfkirche Großschönau

The Dorfkirche Großschönau is a Protestant church with a steep gabled roof, rounded arch windows, and a notable tower crowned with a dome and lantern on the western side. The interior features galleries with religious imagery and holds a contemporary organ in its worship space.

The present structure was built in 1705, replacing an earlier house of worship documented at this location since 1384. This reconstruction marked a significant renewal of the community's religious center during the early modern period.

The interior galleries display biblical narratives, with Old Testament scenes covering the south wall and New Testament depictions on the north wall, both created in 1775. These image sequences served as a visual way for the community to learn and remember religious stories.

The church hosts regular Protestant services and can be visited during scheduled times. The interior galleries with their painted scenes are best viewed in natural daylight, so plan your visit accordingly.

The cemetery surrounding the church holds hundreds of gravestones spanning multiple centuries, including the grave of painter Eleazar Zeissig, which was relocated there in 1894. These monuments offer glimpses into the community's past through the names and dates carved on them.
