Schloss Spree, Schloss in Hähnichen, Landkreis Görlitz, Sachsen
Schloss Spree is a castle in Hähnichen, Saxony, built in baroque style with a rectangular shape and a high sloped roof. The main facade features tall columns and decorative elements around the entrance, set on a solid stone foundation.
The castle was first mentioned in 1380 as a water fortress and belonged to various noble families including the von Gablenz line over centuries. After a fire in 1712, it was rebuilt in 1749 as a baroque structure that continues to define the townscape today.
The castle's name comes from Petir de Spre, a landowner from 1390 whose name shaped the region's identity. The building reflects how noble families lived and managed their estates across centuries.
The castle can be viewed from outside and visited during a walk or hike in the area. It is easily accessible by car or bike, and the surrounding paths are friendly for walking.
On the west side stands a small 19th-century addition with a pointed tower that originally served as a chapel. This gothic-influenced structure shows how different architectural styles were combined over time.
