St. Jacob's Church, Herxheim am Berg, Protestant church in Herxheim am Berg, Germany.
St. Jacob's Church is a Protestant church in the wine village of Herxheim am Berg, in Rhineland-Palatinate, with the oldest parts dating back to the early 11th century. The nave was rebuilt in the 18th century and features a groin-vaulted chancel and a semicircular apse.
The church was founded around 1014, making it one of the oldest church buildings still standing in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the 18th century the building was largely rebuilt, though the medieval chancel was kept.
Inside the church, wall paintings from the 14th century show the Four Evangelists in two different ways: as winged human figures and with their symbolic animal heads. These images are among the first things visitors notice when they step inside.
The church is worth visiting when it is open for services or general viewing, so it is a good idea to check current opening times before arriving. The building sits in the center of the village and is easy to spot when walking through.
A bell cast in 1934 and bearing inscriptions from the Nazi period still hangs in the tower. A plaque next to it explains its origin, making it an unusual historical document inside a working place of worship.
