Jungborn, Historical spa facility in Stapelburg, Germany
Jungborn is a spa facility in Stapelburg located on the eastern edge of the Harz mountains, situated across expansive woodland terrain sheltered from wind by dense forest cover. The buildings are spread throughout the grounds according to healing principles that centered on water, earth, light, and air exposure.
Adolf Just founded this natural healing institution in 1896 and developed a comprehensive system of holistic therapy centered on nature. During World War II, the grounds were converted for military medical use, ending its original purpose as a private healing retreat.
Franz Kafka visited the facility in 1912, where the natural healing methods and vegetarian diet helped him overcome a period of writer's block.
The location is easily accessible thanks to its position within wooded terrain and offers ample space for exploring the grounds at your own pace. Summer visits are most pleasant, as the natural surroundings are in full growth and pathways are clear and walkable.
The grounds contain special air huts and light-air houses featuring large window walls designed to maximize exposure to natural elements for healing. This unusual building approach was an experimental method at the time for using environmental factors as therapy.
