Oderbrücke Bienenwerder, Railway truss bridge at Germany-Poland border
Oderbrücke Bienenwerder is a railway truss bridge that spans 785 meters across the river, connecting the German town of Oderaue to the Polish town of Cedynia. The structure displays typical characteristics of steel truss design, with diagonal bracing and connecting elements that support the entire span.
The structure was built in 1892 as a combined railway and road bridge and was reconstructed in 1957 after destruction during World War II. During the 1930s, it underwent redesign to adapt the construction to changing needs.
The bridge serves as a meeting point between German and Polish communities, where people on foot cross from one nation to another in minutes. Walking across its steel structure feels like stepping directly between two neighboring lands.
Since 2022, pedestrians and cyclists can use the former railway bridge to cross between neighboring communities of both countries. The path is openly accessible and provides a direct crossing without detours.
The central truss span measures about 91 meters and was the longest structure across the Oder when it was completed. This engineering achievement shows how advanced construction techniques were at that time.
