Moreau-Denkmal, Heritage monument at Räcknitzhöhe, Dresden, Germany
The Moreau-Denkmal is a war monument on Räcknitzhöhe in Dresden designed in a classical style. An iron-cast Greek helmet, sword, and laurel wreath are mounted on a syenite stone base.
The monument was built to honor Jean-Victor Moreau, a French general who fought against Napoleon and served as adjutant general to Tsar Alexander I. He died in 1813 near this location during the Battle of Dresden.
The monument marks a place where visitors come to remember a French general who fought against Napoleon. The three oak trees beside it are symbols of alliance between the nations and have grown at this location for more than two centuries.
The monument is reached via marked paths on Räcknitzhöhe with good visibility from the surrounding area. Information plaques at the site explain the restoration work and the history of the location.
An unusual and little-known aspect of this monument is that parts of Moreau's remains rest beneath the stone. His amputated legs were interred in an urn below the monument in 1814.
