Sankt Josef, Religious architectural structure in Bavaria, Germany

Sankt Josef is a Catholic church in Holzkirchen, Bavaria, built from 2016 and consecrated in 2018. Its design by Munich architect Eberhard Wimmer consists of two truncated or slanted cones, one for the church and one for the weekday chapel, linked by a flat-roofed structure. The cones are made of horizontal two-part wooden rings with steel inserts and laminated veneer lumber, and the roofs are covered mainly with wooden shingles.

The first St. Josef church on this site was consecrated on 24 June 1962, designed by Franz Ruf with a seven-sided plan and a tent-like roof that earned it the name "Zelt Gottes". Closed in November 2011 over the risk of collapse, it was deconsecrated in 2012 and demolished in summer 2014, while the separate bell tower stayed. The Munich architect Eberhard Wimmer designed the replacement; its foundation stone was laid on 18 March 2016 and Archbishop Reinhard Marx consecrated it on 18 March 2018.

The church is dedicated to Saint Joseph of Nazareth, and its 2018 consecration by Archbishop Reinhard Marx was attended by the parish. The four bells were cast in light profiles by the Erding bell foundry under Karl Czudnochowsky. The organ, built by Orgelbau Frenger of Bruckmühl, reused most parts of the previous instrument and was first played at the consecration on 18 March 2018.

The new church won a special prize at the 2018 Bavarian Timber Construction Award for its unusual formal language and materiality and its spatial quality. Its cone shape echoes the nearby moraine hill and the Alpine silhouette, and the flat-roofed link joins church and weekday chapel.
