St. Matthäus, Lutheran church in southern Erlangen, Germany

St. Matthäus is a Lutheran church in southern Erlangen with a rectangular design built from pale Jura limestone. The building features a clean, modern design with large windows that flood the interior with light, where the altar and organ sit on an elevated platform at the southern end.

Construction began in 1957 under Munich architect Gustav Gsaenger and the building was consecrated on April 3, 1960. The project arose in the postwar period to serve the growing Lutheran community in Erlangen.

The name St. Matthäus refers to the apostle and patron saint, whose image appears in the interior decoration. The church serves the evangelical community as a place for worship and shows through its bright spaces and large windows the open preaching style of Protestantism.

The church is located in the southern part of the city and is easy to reach on foot. The interior has ample space with plenty of seating and good sightlines from every position.

The bell tower holds five bells that together form the largest and deepest-sounding carillon in Erlangen. The bells were cast in 1961 by the Bachert foundry in Karlsruhe and produce a particularly warm sound.
