Stadtkirche Preetz

Stadtkirche Preetz is a medieval church on a hill overlooking Kirchsee lake, combining fieldstone walls with late Romanesque and baroque design elements. Its interior holds a Romanesque baptismal font from the 1200s, decorative bronze objects, and chandeliers that span several centuries.

The church was built between 1200 and 1210 as a fortified structure during the Christianization of the northern region. Over time, baroque additions altered the building's appearance and reflected changing religious and artistic tastes.

The church sits prominently above the lake and continues to serve as a gathering place for worship and community events. The interior art and decorative objects reflect how local faith and craftsmanship were expressed over centuries.

A carved wooden baptismal angel suspended from the ceiling dates to the 1700s and represents an uncommon form of baroque religious art. This piece draws the eye immediately when entering the worship space and rarely appears in other churches of the same period.
