Blutsee-Moor, Nature reserve in Irtenberger Forest, Bavaria, Germany
Blutsee-Moor is a protected nature reserve in Irtenberger Forest consisting of several hectares of wetland with floating meadows resting on underground water bodies. The landscape features boggy areas with characteristic vegetation typical of a lowland wetland ecosystem in Lower Franconia.
The area received protection status in 1941 to preserve its valuable ecosystems. Additional conservation measures were implemented in 1998 to ensure long-term protection of this rare wetland.
The moor attracts researchers studying the red algae Euglena sanguinea, which gives the lake its distinctive blood-red color. Visitors can observe this biological feature from the surrounding paths.
The moor itself is closed to visitors for safety reasons, but marked hiking trails around the perimeter allow you to observe the area. The trails are easy to follow and offer good vantage points for exploring the landscape.
This site contains the largest floating meadows in Lower Franconia and represents the only fen in Bavaria at this specific developmental stage. It serves as a scientific reference location for understanding this particular type of wetland.
