Buchenwald östlich Klötze, Protected forest near Klötze, Germany
This protected forest east of Klötze covers roughly 500 hectares of beech and oak woodland on gently rolling moraine terrain. The area contains natural ponds and wetland areas interspersed throughout the mixed woodland.
The woodland received Natura 2000 designation in 2000 and was formally designated as a Special Area of Conservation in 2018. These protections reflect the ecological value of the site for wildlife.
The forest contains substantial beech trees dominated by Fagus sylvatica and Quercus petraea, representing traditional German woodland management practices.
The site is accessible to visitors but has no developed trails or visitor facilities. Woodland walks are possible across the area, though the terrain can be muddy and uneven in places.
The forest provides crucial habitat for several bat species including a rare species that hunts among the older trees at night. These old-growth beech and oak trees create the sheltered conditions these animals depend on.
