Lechstaustufe 8a – Kinsau, Hydroelectric power station and barrage in Kinsau, Germany
Lechstaustufe 8a is a hydroelectric power station with barrage on the Lech River near Kinsau. The facility uses two Kaplan turbines to generate electricity from the flowing water while regulating its course downstream.
The site began as a sawmill in 1900 and was converted to a canal power station in 1907. A major reconstruction took place in 1992 to modernize the facility.
The facility represents German engineering excellence in renewable energy production while maintaining the natural balance through integrated environmental protection measures.
The facility sits within a nature reserve and can be viewed from outside, with surroundings that invite walking. Access is generally open, though keep in mind it remains an active industrial site.
Fish passages allow fish to bypass the power station and migrate upstream. This cooperation shows how electricity generation and nature protection can exist together at the same location.
