Wildweiberhäuschen, Protected area in Haiger, Germany

Wildweiberhäuschen is a nature reserve in Langenaubach near Haiger that protects creek meadows, species-rich tall herb communities, and deciduous woodlands across roughly 23 hectares. Alongside the meadows along Aubach creek, the old limestone rock formations with their caves and the surrounding maple, ash, and alder forests define the character of the reserve.

The limestone cliffs formed roughly 360 million years ago in an ancient ocean and were later exposed through erosion. Researchers found bones of cave bears and reindeer inside the caves, showing that animals used the rock shelter during the Ice Age.

Local tradition has long given the limestone rocks their unusual name, linking them to folk tales about wild women who once lived in the forest. The stories still shape how visitors see the caves and cliffs today, adding a layer of mystery to the walk through the reserve.

The reserve lies on the southern edge of Langenaubach between Aubach creek and the K41 road toward Breitscheid and can be explored along a loop trail. The paths pass through wet terrain with meadows and forests, so sturdy footwear and some time for observing nature are recommended.

Several bat species use the caves as winter roosts and spend the cold months resting quietly inside. The meadows and forest edges also host rare plants such as globeflowers, orchids, columbines, and alpine woundwort, which are now uncommon in the region.
