Aue des unteren Sengbachtals, Nature reserve in Solingen, Germany.
Aue des unteren Sengbachtals is a 119-hectare protected area featuring alder floodplain forests and wet grasslands shaped by the winding Sengbach river. The valley sits at elevations between 160 and 210 meters and contains diverse habitats including forest and open wetland areas.
The government of North Rhine-Westphalia designated this protected area in 2005 to preserve the natural state of the Sengbach river valley. This protection aimed to secure the ecological functions of the river and its floodplains for the long term.
Local residents view this valley as a vital refuge for wildlife, where visitors can experience undisturbed natural surroundings. The forests and meadows shape the valley's character and demonstrate how natural landscapes are preserved for the protection of animals and plants.
Marked walking trails run throughout the reserve with several entry points accessible from Solingen. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, as wet grassland can be soft after rain and forest floors are uneven.
The valley floor stretches for about 1,400 meters with wide, meandering river sections that provide habitat for rare species like brown trout and blue-winged damselflies. These calm river stretches are particularly suited for observing these creatures.
