Weiherwiesen

Weiherwiesen is a protected nature reserve in the Swabian Jura featuring two ponds, wet meadows, and distinctive limestone formations. Walking paths guide visitors through the landscape to observe the different habitats and vegetation.

Archaeological discoveries from the Middle Bronze Age, including burial mounds and settlement remains, show that humans inhabited this area thousands of years ago. These findings indicate a long history of human activity in the region.

The area served as a traditional sheep-washing site where shepherds brought their flocks for cleaning. Visitors can still see the open meadows that supported this historical rural practice.

The reserve is accessible on foot with trails suitable for visitors of varying abilities. Wear sturdy footwear and plan your visit during warmer months when the wet meadows are easier to navigate.

The reserve harbors rare orchid species that visitors can discover while walking the trails. These specialized flowers thrive in the wet conditions of the meadows and attract butterflies and other insects.
