Merfelder Bruch, Heubachniederung

Merfelder Bruch is a protected landscape area near Dülmen featuring open meadows, wetland areas, and natural vegetation spread across rolling terrain. Herds of wild horses roam freely throughout this space, creating the visual centerpiece of the reserve.

The area was first documented in 1316 when hunting, fishing, and wild horse rights were formally recorded. This deep connection between the landscape and its horses has persisted through medieval times to the present day.

The wild horses here are central to local identity, with residents taking pride in maintaining herds that have lived in this area for centuries. The annual capture ritual reflects how the community keeps old customs alive through direct participation and observation.

Access is best on foot or by bicycle, as vehicles are restricted to protect the horses and preserve the natural setting. Bring weather-appropriate clothing since the open landscape offers little shelter and conditions can change quickly.

This is home to Europe's only truly wild horse herds that survive without human feeding or care, grazing and breeding independently. These horses have adapted genetically to the harsh moorland conditions and remain distinct from domesticated breeds.
