Ehemalige Kreisirrenanstalt Deggendorf

The former district mental health facility in Deggendorf is a group of buildings arranged in multiple wings around courtyards, built in the 1800s. The two to three-story structures feature decorative brickwork and stone details across their exterior faces.

This facility was built between 1863 and 1868 as part of a period when Bavaria developed new institutions for patient care. It emerged during a time of expanding healthcare structures across the southern region.

The buildings reflect how care and treatment were understood in the 1800s through their layout and design choices. The arrangement of different sections shows the thinking of that era about how patients should be housed and managed.

The complex sits near the city center close to the park, making it easy to reach on foot from downtown. Visitors will find it in a central location without much detour from the main streets.

A small chapel called the Saalkirche sits within the complex at building 29, where services were held for both patients and staff. This mixing of spiritual care with medical treatment in one institution reflects common practices of that era.
