Schloss Hoym, Cultural heritage castle in Hoym, Germany.
Schloss Hoym is a two-story castle in Hoym, built between 1714 and 1721 and displaying characteristic features of the early 18th century. The building has high basement levels, three-axle risalits with pointed roofs on the courtyard side, and preserved stucco ceilings inside.
The castle was built from 1714 to 1721 for Leberecht, son of Prince Victor Amadeus of Anhalt-Bernburg, and replaced an older water castle that stood since 1038. This construction marked a shift from medieval to baroque architecture at the location.
Wilhelm von Kügelgen resided in the castle from 1836 to 1863, where he wrote his life memories and contributed to German literature.
The location now operates as a facility for adults with intellectual disabilities, providing specialized care and psychological support. Visitors should note this specialized use and check in advance whether and when visits are possible.
The baroque courtyard portal features a half-figure of Prince Victor Amadeus accompanied by statues of Jupiter, Mercury, Minerva, and Apollo. These sculptures represent the power and learning that the family who commissioned the castle sought to display.
