Protestant Church Wolfen, Lutheran church in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany

The Johanneskirche in Wolfen is a neo-Romanesque brick church built in 1897–1898 to a design by Delitzsch building inspector Alexander Lauth. It has a Greek-cross plan with an east tower housing the main entrance beneath a rose window, flanked by two stair towers. The tower's original four-sided helm roof was replaced by a simpler saddle roof in 1963–64. Greppiner clinker brick was used, and the church is a protected monument.

Wolfen's old village church of 1596 became too small after lignite was found in 1846 and a briquette factory opened in 1880. Agfa, which had built its colour factory between Greppin and Wolfen in 1896, commissioned the new church; it was begun in 1897 and completed in 1898 to a design by Delitzsch building inspector Alexander Lauth. In 1963–64 the tall four-sided tower roof was removed and replaced by a simpler saddle roof.

The church holds regular concerts today. Since 1981 it has housed the carved Niemegk altar from the 16th century, whose shrine shows the Madonna on the crescent moon with Peter and Paul, the wings Catherine and Barbara, and the outer sides Luke and Maurice. A bell cast in 1898 by the Ulrich bell-founders of Laucha survives.

The church stands at the corner of Kirchstraße and Leipziger Straße, southeast of the old village cemetery, with the main entrance in the tower beneath the rose window. Regular concerts are held in the building, so opening beyond service times depends on such events. The tower's original four-sided helm was replaced by a simpler saddle roof in 1963–64.

The tower's original tall, four-sided helm roof was removed in 1963 and 1964 and replaced by a simpler gabled roof, a change kept during the 1999–2000 restoration. Inside, the square nave has an eight-part ceiling that creates the impression of a dome. The 16th-century Niemegk carved altar was brought here in 1981 when Niemegk was open-cast mined.
