Südtondern-Kaserne, Military facility in Stadum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
Südtondern-Kaserne is a military base in Stadum, a small locality in Schleswig-Flensburg district, Schleswig-Holstein. The compound consists of several buildings spread across a large flat site, including accommodation blocks and operational facilities for stationed personnel.
The barracks were built in the early 1960s and initially housed air force units stationed in northern Germany. Over the following decades, the assigned military branches and their roles changed more than once.
The base sits in a sparsely populated part of North Schleswig, where the military has long been part of everyday life in the surrounding villages. Its position close to the Danish border gives the area a particular character that locals are well aware of.
The site is reached via the B199 federal highway and lies in a rural part of northern Schleswig-Holstein with little public transport. As an active military installation, the grounds are not open to the public.
During the severe snowstorms of the winter of 1978-1979, the barracks opened as an emergency shelter for civilians from the surrounding region. Many older residents of northern Schleswig-Holstein still remember this episode today.
