Wohn- und Geschäftshäuser Lüneburger Straße 31a/41, Protected cultural heritage buildings in Östliche Vorstadt, Bremen.
The buildings at Lüneburger Straße 31a/41 are three-story structures in Neo-Renaissance style, featuring a distinctive octagonal corner tower and decorated gable details. The complex occupies a prominent corner location and combines residential apartments with ground-floor commercial spaces in a single integrated design.
The building complex was constructed between 1895 and 1896 following designs by architect Wilhelm Blanke and marks the expansion of Bremen during the late 19th century industrial growth. Its completion coincided with the city's eastward development and the creation of new residential districts for the growing population.
The buildings show how residential and commercial spaces were mixed together in daily life, reflecting how people lived and worked in the same area. You can still observe how this blend of functions shaped the character of the street.
The buildings stand at a corner intersection where tram tracks branch off in different directions, making it a busy traffic hub. Visiting allows you to view the architecture from multiple angles while observing how the space functions as an active urban crossing point.
A major renovation in 2021 demonstrated how the historical facade was preserved while nine new residential units were created inside the structure. This project shows how these century-old buildings continue to provide modern housing without losing their original appearance.
