Abteikirche Niederaltaich, Monastery church in Niederalteich, Germany

Abteikirche Niederaltaich is a three-aisled hall church of nine bays, with three bays in the choir and six in the nave. Its Gothic core was given a Baroque overhaul by Johann Michael Fischer from 1724 to 1727. The west front has two towers: the south tower was completed by Carlo Antonio Carlone in 1698, and the north tower was added in 1730–1735. The pale facade rises above a red-tiled roof, and the right tower carries a clock face.

The abbey was founded in 741 by Duke Odilo of Bavaria and settled by monks from Reichenau. It grew over centuries into an important religious and cultural center along the Danube River.

The church is dedicated to Saint Maurice, and since 1931 it has held the title of minor basilica, conferred by Pope Pius XII. The monastic community returned in 1918, and the church again serves as an abbey church alongside its role as the parish church of Niederalteich since 1803.

The church stands in the abbey complex at Mauritiushof 1a in Niederalteich, close to the Danube. After the 1813 lightning fire the two baroque onion domes were rebuilt as the simple pyramids seen today, and the baroque side chapels on the nave and the north cloister were demolished; wall springing marks still show where the cloister vault began.

The two towers are not the originals: after lightning struck on 7 March 1813 and the towers burned out, the baroque onion domes were replaced by the simple pyramids seen today. The north tower was only built in 1730–1735, matching the south tower completed by Carlo Antonio Carlone in 1698.
