Zionskirche, Lutheran church in Südvorstadt district, Dresden, Germany
Zionskirche is a church building in Dresden's Sudvorstadt district, completed in 1982. The modern structure replaced the original building that once stood on Bayreuther Strasse and was destroyed during World War II.
The original structure was built between 1908 and 1912 by architects Schilling and Graebner. It was destroyed during the bombing of Dresden in 1945, after which this current building was constructed.
The name draws from the biblical Mount Zion and carries meaning as a symbol of hope for the congregation. Visitors experience this sense of refuge when they enter and observe how the space serves the local community.
The building is accessible in the Sudvorstadt area and offers a calm setting for a visit. Note that the church is primarily open during services and community events throughout the week.
The ruins of the original building were converted into a lapidarium holding around 3000 sculptures and architectural fragments from historical Dresden buildings. This collection transforms the site into a quiet record of the city's architectural past.
