St.-Nicolai-et-St.-Martini-Kirche, Lutheran church in Steinkirchen, Germany.
St.-Nicolai-et-St.-Martini-Kirche is a brick church with a separate wooden bell tower rising 47 meters high above the village. Inside stands a notable Baroque organ built in the 17th century by the renowned craftsman Arp Schnitger.
First documented in 1332, the church underwent a major renovation from 1687 to 1785 that transformed its original stone structure into a Baroque hall church. This extended period of rebuilding gave the building its current character.
A bronze sculpture outside depicts a monk named Heinrich, honoring Dutch settlers who arrived in the 13th century to farm and develop the land. This monument reflects how the community remembers those early inhabitants and their influence on the region.
The church is open to visitors during daytime hours and continues to serve as an active place of worship with regular services and events. Check locally before visiting to confirm access times, especially if you hope to hear the organ being played during a concert or service.
The organ was crafted by Dutch master Arp Schnitger in 1687 and ranks among the largest instruments in the entire Old Land region. Its ornate facade and rich sound draw the attention of organists and music enthusiasts from far away.
