Niemeyer-Kugel, Concrete and glass sphere sculpture in Neulindenau, Germany.
The Niemeyer Sphere is a concrete and glass sculpture in Neulindenau, Leipzig, perched atop an old industrial building. The spherical form measures twelve meters in diameter and combines white concrete walls with triangular glass surfaces that let light enter the interior.
Ludwig Koehne, owner of the former Kirow factory, started the project in 2011 through correspondence with Oscar Niemeyer, who completed the plans before his death. The sphere opened in 2020 and transformed the old industrial site into a new public space.
The name honors the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, whose design became his final project before passing away. Today the structure serves as an accessible cultural venue that connects modernist social vision with a living meeting place.
The sphere spreads across three levels, with the café located in the middle and the top floor offering a 91-square-meter lounge. Entry gives access to all public areas, from which you can look out over the industrial site and surroundings.
The triangular glass surfaces contain special technology that automatically adjusts their transparency according to daylight conditions. This adaptive glazing continuously changes the atmosphere inside and responds to sun and shade from outside.
